AXE - Destiel AU
Ninth part
I own nothing but my fantasies.

They had not walked far when this someone appeared in front of them, seemingly out of thin air, and stopped them abruptly in their tracks. Dean almost jumped in surprise at the sight of the stranger, before he automatically tried to get his hand free in the awkward situation of being caught holding hands. But he realized by then how hard Castiel was holding on to his hand, and Dean couldn't possibly get free. He sent a frustrated look at Castiel but he didn't notice Dean's uncomfortable state, just stared wide eyed at the man before them, frozen in visible fear. First when seeing this, did Dean realize that this wasn't very good, a stranger seeing the angel was actually no good at all.

"Who're you?" he demanded loudly, angry at the trespass on their property, and hurriedly stepped in front of Castiel in an attempt to get him out of sight. But just as abruptly Castiel moved him back behind himself, now shielding him instead, and his unnatural strength made it impossible for Dean to say or do otherwise.

"If you're not the most adorable couple." the man suddenly said with a wide grin, it all sounding lazily arrogant with that posh-but-not-really-that-nice-part-of-the-British-dialect, and Dean immediately disliked him. "Are you done now or would you like to change places one more time?"

"Balthazar." Castiel tensed said in response, to Dean's surprise.

"Cas, you know this guy?" he exclaimed, eyeing the average-looking man, scrawny and shorter than both of them, with blond hair and just as blond a stumble, with piercing eyes and a careless expression to both face and body movements. His clothes was modern like city snobs on TV wore, in dark purple and black and pure silk with tasteful details. Again, the word "posh" came to mind but not in a nice way there either.

"He is my brother." Castiel stated, still just as tensed.

"Brother…? As in an angel!?"

"Yes, very nice to meet you." Dean felt a violent jolt go through his stomach, so he didn't really hear that the man was talking to him. Suddenly everything felt real, all of his fears reappearing all in one second.

"You just shut up and get the hell out of here!"

"Whoa, down boy." the man once again grinned arrogantly and amused, instead of intimidated. "Don't go get your knickers in a twist, there's no need to get all defensive."

"Fockoff. And don't think I'm gonna treat you nicely, I know why you're here, you bastard."

"Oh really? Do enlighten me."

"Oh I donno, maybe to kill Cas cause daddy told you to? Cause you haven't figured out how to think for yourself yet."

"You sure have a busy mouth, don't you?"

"And what's that supposed to mean?"

"Then, what did I just witness, if you weren't going down on my little brother just minutes ago? Oh, I know exactly what's going on in that little head of your's, alright."

"You sonova…!"

"There, there, calm yourself, sweetheart. Jeez. You got one loud human being there, Castiel."

"Leave him alone, Balthazar." Castiel silently interrupted, both looking and sounding afraid, as Dean was about to explode in anger.

"Aw… But he's so fun to tease."

"Please?"

"Oh alright…" Balthazar disappointingly gave in and made a pouting face, though indifferently without removing his hands from his pants' pockets. "But you owe me one. Actually you owe me big time aside from that. I'm not here to kill you or your human. I've put up a couple of wards around this place but it won't hold you hidden for long."

"Say what now again?" Dean exclaimed in disbelieve but Castiel's hold on him relaxed a little.

"I can't stay long so keep your idiot comments to yourself, ok, loverboy? We need to talk, Castiel, but now is not the right time. But you might need to know that you got to stop being seen among humans. Even in prayers humans talk about everything that happened to them during the day. Especially if they that day saw an angel in their town and thought it was some holy revelation. You should be happy I was the one who heard that boring prayer before someone else heard it and found you. Just lay low for now, lay underneath that human of yours for all I care, just don't be seen. And don't call for me, I'll come to you later."

"Wait, Balthazar," Castiel was finally able to move again and let go of Dean to take a step forward, "why are you doing this?"

"I haven't decided yet?" Balthazar offered, grinning that arrogant smile again, and vanished just as abruptly as he had appeared.

"Wait…" Dean started but caught himself talking to empty air and cursed loudly instead, automatically looking around as if to see where the man had gone. "What the fuck was that? Never mind. We need to get you inside now."

In an attempt to get control over the situation, Dean dragged Castiel inside the now empty kitchen as if it was the safest place to hide an angel.

"Again, who the fuck was that?"

"It was Balthazar." Castiel stated, again back to his calm self, looking at him like he couldn't understand why Dean was so upset.

"Yeah and he was your brother, I got that. But he didn't exactly look like an angel. You know, clearly no wings?"

"Balthazar has wings. But normally on earth an angel's wings is not visible unless the angel wants them to be. I don't know why I can't hide mine."

"Alright, so he's your angel brother. Why didn't he kill you then?"

"I don't know. Please, don't be angry."

"I'm not!" Dean frustrated exclaimed but understood very well what he sounded like and tried to calm himself. "Its just… I don't like him."

"Balthazar has always been…" Castiel hesitated, clearly searching for the right word. "…odd. But we can trust him."

"Sorry, but I don't trust him one bit. Sounded more to me like he hadn't decided yet if he could be trusted or wouldn't just change his mind again if it suited him. Arrogant bastard."

"I trust him. He has taken a great risk in helping me. Going against God's will and all our brothers and sisters."

"All the more he has to lose. And the more suspicious it looks."

"You are not trusting my judgment." Castiel furrowed his eyebrows, looking straight into Dean's eyes as if he wanted to see if it what he was saying really was true. Dean couldn't meet that intense stare for long, and averted his eyes with the excuse to rub the back of his neck.

"Yeah I am. I just think we should be careful is all. You're not considered being one of them anymore and you can't be sure you can trust him either anymore. I'm gonna learn some of those spells and shields from that book we found before, just in case." Castiel still didn't look happy and Dean moved in closer to touch his arms, with the attempt to lighten the mood. "Hey, don't be angry. I'm just watching your back." The attempt was sort of successful, Castiel at least relaxed a little at the touch and Dean's now quieter voice.

"I know. I have seen you watch my back many times."

"No, dude, that's not what I meant…" Dean started, horrified over finally getting busted, but Castiel interrupted him with an affectionate look in his eyes.

"It doesn't bother me. I like being watched by you."

Besides bringing a smile to Dean's face and making them both lean in for the kiss, that calmly said declaration also woke a storm of unresolved thoughts inside Dean's head.

Dean couldn't say where he'd been that past week but it seemed like it hadn't been in the real world. It had been like a dream and it was time to come back to reality. And seriously speaking, what the hell was he doing? Why would he even try to keep an angel on earth? They sure didn't belong there. But Castiel… He didn't want to let go of Castiel. And why not? Cause he loved him? Like everyone kept saying he did? No, they had no future. He was trying to protect a thing that in reality could only ever be a dream. And if Dean really was in love then he was in some serious problem.

There wasn't many persons Dean could say he'd been in love with, so it was still a hard thing to admit to be even when obvious to everyone else. Lisa would be counted as one of them he'd loved. Maybe because she hadn't been a one-night-stand or just some random girl in a bar, he couldn't say why for sure. They had met through friends and slowly grown into love. But just as slowly Lisa had also fallen out of love. He couldn't lie and say it wasn't hurting him still to think about how he'd felt then, being put down like that when so deep in belief you would be together forever. That was the love Dean knew, slow and hesitant.

So that was what puzzled him so much about this exploding thing with Castiel. He'd fallen from heaven because of a suddenly awaken love for Dean, who he'd never actually met in real life before falling down through his roof. Something that kind of just as suddenly had happened to Dean as well, it had been like love at first sight. Fuck, he was sounding like some sappy chic flick on repeat. There was no such thing as love at first sight. Or at least that was what Dean had been dead certain of two weeks earlier.

Actually when he thought about it now, he had never asked Castiel if he was in love with him. Dean had assumed he was because he'd kissed him barely even five minutes into their acquaintance. But he definitely knew that they didn't always mean the same thing with some words. Maybe Castiel wasn't in love but, simply put, just was curious about it? Even though it sounded a little extreme to fall from heaven by mere curiosity, Castiel had admitted earlier that he didn't understand or hadn't felt love before in the human kind of way. So probably he didn't know how it would feel when he was in love and couldn't really be able to say if he were or not. And maybe he would leave when he got tiered with it or had satisfied his curiosity. And he couldn't stay on earth in the first place, idiot, Dean told himself over and over. That they'd already established, hadn't they? Because of the whole situation and the fact that one of them weren't human, Dean would most surely end up being abandoned again, alone with all that fucking pain again. And fuck. Now he really was sounding like a chic.

Dean had tried to stop it but he couldn't help it, he was in love with the angel and it was a big fucking problem. Personally he'd believed real love to be totally different from that thing in the relationship with Lisa. It was like everything else he did in life, it was all or nothing. And that was why the words just bubbled out of his mouth before he could stop them, he always plunged forward and thought logically later.

"I love you."

It had nearly not been audible there crushed between their lips, but Castiel had heard it and leant a little backwards to be able to look him in the eyes. Dean could barely meet those intensely blue eyes so close to his, their breaths mixing, both slightly out of breath after the kiss.

"I knew you would know after sexual intercourse."

Dean released a relieved sigh in an amused smile as mirth was clearly visible in Castiel's eyes, and both of them wrapped their arms around the other, tightening their embrace but still keeping face to face.

"Do I hear a trace of pride?" Dean teased but Castiel took it seriously.

"I hope not. Pride is a sin."

"Fuck that. I think it's sexy."

"Ahum…" Sam unnecessarily loud cleared his throat to make his presence noticed. Who knew how long he'd been standing there in the first place. Embarrassed just by the sight of his brother, Dean scrammed backwards, managing in the process to first collide with the kitchen-table and then knock one of the chairs over in his eagerness to look innocent. And the longer Dean had time to think the further his fears went, panicking over how much Sam had heard and, even worse, seen. He just couldn't let the silence keep stretching or he'd die of apprehension.

"Sammy?" Dean broke the silence in a mixture of a sigh and some weird uncontrolled yell. Sam made a confused face at the sound but didn't dwell on it.

"Where've you been?"

"Nowhere. Just outside." Of course it was to short and to quick of an answer, and of course Sam looked like he wanted to call on his lie, but of course Dean stopped him before he could. "What is it?"

"I need to talk to you." Something about Sam's hushed voice and sideway glances towards Castiel, was confusing Dean and he felt himself growing serious, and, rather worried as well. "Alone."

"Alright." Dean just as quiet answered, keeping the situation as calm as it had ended up being. "Cas, why don't you go upstairs and get a shower. I'll be up later. Then we'll get some dinner."

Castiel obligingly nodded without showing his evident confusion, and left the room. Sam waited until his thudding footsteps had gone all the way upstairs, before talking again. Something that just made Dean even more worried.

"I've checked those web-pages again. You know, the ones that are like communities for hunters? To compare our book with those hunters' methods. It doesn't seem like they're that operative like this book shows mum and dad was. Its like its more of some hobby for them than actually wanting to protect innocents from evil. Nonetheless, we've got no clue how it works either. So I was thinking that we maybe could ask them for help to ward of the angels. They might be able to read the cipher, I mean."

"Are you serious? If they're some fucking amateurs I'm not placing that book in their hands. Besides we've already got one cipher-reader already."

"You mean Cas?"

"Its practically his first language isn't it?"

"Well anyway, I've already asked them for help." Dean was about to exclaim something in outrage but Sam interrupted him with an unaffected wave of his hand. "Wait, let me finish. I asked them if they knew anything about fallen angels and if they knew some kind of passageway into heaven. They didn't give me much, they wrote something about how angels were hard to catch since they could travel through time and space. But they believe that an angel automatically turns into a demon when falling and should be killed as soon as possible."

"So they're not just retards, they're stupid too?" Dean muttered, liking those amateur hunters less and less.

"Well, that's not the biggest problem. It seems like they've heard about how an angel been sighted here in our town. And it looks like their coming this way to find him. And they're already planning how to best kill him."

"Son of a bitch."

"Yeah, I'm sorry." Sam regretfully nodded, at last loosing his calmness. "Its my fault, I left him alone…" Dean sighed and interrupted Sam before he could get to far.

"Its not your fault, Sammy. That one was all me."

"Well…" Sam hesitated, looking kind of worried all of a sudden. "That's also kind of why I wanted to talk to you alone. You know he can't stay right? Cause it doesn't look like you know. You'll just end up getting hurt if you…"

"Yeah I've already heard that," Dean once again interrupted him before he could get himself to far, "now are you finished with that book?"

"No!" Sam surprised protested when Dean reached out to take the tattered old book from him.

"Well its my time to read it."

"Yeah, and how're you gonna do that? With your cipher reader?" Sam protested again, by now getting a little irritated, but suddenly he reached out to touch Dean's head and Dean automatically retreated in confusion. "Stand still, you've got something in your hair."

Dean obligingly stilled and Sam withdrew some seconds later with a black feather in his hand. Their eyes met over the sight of it and Dean got a strong feeling he was blushing because Sam skeptically raised an eyebrow.

"Will you be able to read anything without jumping him…"

"Give me that." Dean horrified interrupted and snatched the book out of Sam's hand, already moving backwards towards the doorway. "Now go get me some food instead of bitching. And don't forget the pie."

"No need." Sam muttered, looking rather smug for having proved his point. "Bobby's already brought home burgers."

"There any pie?

"Don't think so."

"Fuck. Then you owe me."

"For what!?" Sam exclaimed, once again irritated since Dean looked like he was recovering fast, already leaving the room with an annoyingly unsatisfying explanation.

"Cause I'm the oldest."

"Jerk!" Sam yelled after him but wasn't sure it reached his brother. Now alone, he then noticed he still held the long black feather in his hand and his irritation ran off him in an instant. Instead, a smile spread itself over his face and he buried the feather in his pocket. Dean was always so easy to read.

Dean made an irritated grimace while climbing the stairs. Of course he could read the book without jumping Castiel, he had some sense of decency, for fuck's sake. But when he reached the bathroom with the intention of getting that shower, Castiel sat on top of the toilet-seat, completely naked, in the process of grooming his feathers, correcting and shedding them of the water after the shower. It would've been much more easy to be decent if the angel had some sense of modesty and correctness when it came to his body's nakedness in front of humans on earth. But since he hadn't, Dean turned the water tap all the way to the coldest. It was simply the only thing to do if he wanted to be able to go downstairs again and met his family for dinner.
